Visiting Professors Accommodation
A&L were appointed by Charles Kendall and Partners to design and document new Visiting Professors’ Accommodation for the University of Goroka, Eastern Highlands Province and the Pacific Adventist University in Port Moresby, PNG.
The PNG Government received funding from the Commonwealth of Australia through DFAT to procure Consultancy Services to undertake this activity.
The objective of the Consultancy was to:-
- Prepare concept designs for “2 x 2 Bedrooms VPA with a budget cost of PGK 750,000 per University including fixtures, furniture and equipment” to meet Stakeholder expectations for function, materials, construction, maintenance and budget;
- Prepare construction documentation to be used in the process of engaging Construction Contractors for each campus;
- Secure Building Permits for construction at each site;
- Assist as required during the tendering and construction periods.
In April, 2014, A&L’s design team mobilised in PNG to meet with the relevant stakeholders in Port Moresby and Goroka, carry out preliminary site analysis and prepare a number of costed design options.
A Design Mission Report was issued in 15 May 2014 outlining the process to date, preliminary site analysis, design briefs, stakeholder consultations, costed design options presented and stakeholder preferences. Following the approval of the Design Mission Report with the preferred design options, the design team were instructed to proceed with detailed site surveys and geotechnical investigations – based on the agreed site locations and building layouts. Schematic designs were then further developed by the design team.
The Concept Design Report was issued in October, 2014, and included site surveys, geotechnical reports, Architect’s brief, concept designs, cost estimates and approval letters from both Universities. The Concept Design Report was approved but funding is yet to be made available to allow the project to be documented for tender.
